Undergraduate Diploma in Computer Systems Engineering

This programme is designed to equip students with essential knowledge and skills required for basic network and IT setups, ensuring they are prepared for technical roles in the industry. This programme is being developed in collaboration with ISB Technologies Malta as a direct initiative to educate prospective recruits of ISB with the necessary knowledge to perform as Computer Systems Engineers, and to offer an opportunity to students who are interested in Computer Systems Engineering to gain a recognised certification and to be introduced to a leading local company and the way that they work in Computer Systems Engineering in the local market.

ISB Technologies delivers on-premises and cloud-based ICT systems together with supporting services that any business may require. These services include Virtualisation solutions, disaster recovery planning, Networking, IT Consultancy and round-the-clock IT Support. ISB is a proud partner of CISCO, Office 365, ESSET, peplink, 3CX and HP.

Students who complete the programme will be geared towards the local market and possess the ability to:

  • Assist the system engineer
  • Follow instructions for set up of client systems
  • Work directly with superiors for the completion of systems projects
  • Troubleshooting network and devices machines
  • Physical set up of new work stations for clients
  • On-site inspections (at clients)
  • Give basic instructions and information on what they are doing to help the client understand the processes
  • Support clients and provide 1st line support guidance
  • Conduct preventive maintenance including cleaning the devices and taking logs,identifying issues with the system, providing clients with recommendations
  • Installation of servers

  • Conduct advanced troubleshooting of network system
  • Setting up and maintaining Microsoft 365 setups

  • TARGET GROUP AND ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

    Target Group

      Students who apply for this diploma programme are usually interested in computer networking and hands-on work, enhancing their personal knowledge of the subject and gaining hands-on experience in a subject that they love.

    Entry Requirements

      Students who have no training in the field must have completed an MQF Level 4 or equivalent in any subject. However, student's circumstances and experiences may also be considered during the application process—five years of relevant working experience in the industry of specialisation. Kindly view our RPL (recognition of prior learning) previously approved by the MFHEA policy in Appendix A.

      Similarly, students applying for the course need to be fluent in English since the course is taught in English. Therefore, proof of B2 level of English should be provided by the students upon application - IELTS level/grade 6 or the student&'s country equivalent.

      Candidates will be asked to present their previously obtained qualifications and their transcripts (if any).

      Candidates who have demonstrated qualifications in IT/computer sciences or work experience in the sector will be given preference.

  • PROGRAMME LEARNING OUTCOMES

    Knowledge and Understanding

    The learner will be able to:

    • Recall in depth theoretical and practical knowledge of network protocols which include the knowledge of the set up of firewalls and their diverse uses in practice.
    • Learn about and critically analyse the different types of servers and their services, including developing a solid foundation of knowledge of the installation, maintenance and troubleshooting of servers.
    • Acquire advanced knowledge of Microsoft 365 including set up of tenant, users, and management.
    • Develop in depth theoretical and practical knowledge of back up systems, including the practical knowledge of creating and maintaining back up systems.
    • Recall knowledge of navigating supplier forums (e.g., Cisco, Microsoft) as well as develop a strong know-how of dealing with potential issues with using third-party forums for troubleshooting and the ability to analyse this information critically in line with the client's needs.
    • Develop in depth theoretical knowledge of Apache and basic PHP.

    Skills

    The learner will be able to:

    • Assemble a server — the server will be formed of many individual hardware components.
    • Installation of server services such as file server, DHCP server, active directory, DNS server, print server, web server and ad hoc servers according to the client's recommendations.
    • Participate in the setup of brand-new ICT Infrastructure and maintain existing systems including server setups, wired and wireless networks, communication and security systems.
    • Deploy basic coding in PHP.
    • Access client's documentation and update according to ongoing procedures.
    • Ability to field and answer client questions regarding network and services.
    • Implementation of network protocols.
    • Operate and set up Microsoft 365 tenants and managed services.
    • Collaborate effectively with other ICT and infrastructure professionals.
  • TEACHING, LEARNING, AND ASSESSMENT

    General Pedagogical Methods

    The Diploma in Computer Systems Engineering employs a comprehensive and diverse pedagogical approach to ensure a well-rounded and effective learning experience. The programme includes traditional lectures to provide foundational theoretical knowledge, coupled with extensive hands-on practice sessions that allow students to apply and reinforce their skills in real-world scenarios. Demonstrations by instructors further clarify complex concepts and techniques, while guest speakers from the industry offer invaluable insights and perspectives on current trends and professional practices. To cater to diverse learning needs, the programme incorporates a variety of continuous and final assessment methods, including practical exams, projects, presentations, and written tests, ensuring that all students have the opportunity to showcase their understanding and abilities in multiple ways.

    When it comes to supervised placement and practice hours, practice equipment from ISB Technologies will be brought to the Ascencia Malta premises for students to use.

    General Assessment Methods

    To cater to diverse learning needs, the programme incorporates a variety of continuous and final assessment methods, including practical exams, projects, presentations, and written tests, ensuring that all students have the opportunity to showcase their understanding and abilities in multiple ways.

    Grading and Progression

    The grading system is as follows: Pass 60–69%, Merit 70–79%, Distinction 80%+.

    For each module, students are required to achieve the minimum pass mark. Students who fail the module have an opportunity to resit. Should the student fail a second time, they will need to repeat the complete module.
