Think Outside the Box and Be the Donkey!
In what felt like the blink of an eye, September has arrived, bringing with it the promise of slightly cooler days and, fingers crossed, a little less humidity!
Last month at Ascencia Malta, our newest team member certainly created quite a buzz. Cenia the Donkey sparked plenty of conversations, and while many loved our new mascot, others questioned why we had chosen a donkey to represent everything Ascencia Malta stands for. The answer is simple: because we believe in challenging stereotypes.
For far too long, donkeys have been unfairly labelled as stubborn, unintelligent, or slow. In reality, nothing could be further from the truth. Donkeys are remarkably intelligent animals, capable of solving problems at levels comparable to dogs and even dolphins. They possess exceptional memories, remembering people and places years after encountering them. They are resilient, patient, observant, and incredibly dependable. Rather than reacting impulsively, donkeys carefully assess situations before making decisions, a quality that reflects wisdom rather than stubbornness.
Studies have shown that donkeys show signs of intelligence through cognitive traits such as memory, problem-solving, learning from their environment, and adapting to new challenges. Consequently, the more we learnt about these extraordinary animals, the more convinced we became that the donkey perfectly represents what Ascencia Malta believes in.
At Ascencia Malta, we are passionate about breaking down barriers and challenging misconceptions. We believe that intelligence cannot be measured by labels, that talent flourishes when given the right opportunities, and that every individual has the potential to succeed when supported with the right guidance, encouragement, and environment.
Sadly, many people grow up being told they are ‘not good enough,’ ‘not clever enough,’ or that higher education simply isn't for them. We reject those assumptions entirely. We believe that determination, perseverance, and the willingness to learn are far more important than the labels others place upon us.
Our mission is not simply to teach. It is to build confidence, unlock potential, and empower every student to believe in themselves and achieve the qualifications they have worked so hard to earn.
So, if you've ever been told you couldn't succeed, remember Cenia. Be the donkey. Challenge the stereotype. Believe in yourself. And prove that determination will always overcome doubt.
After all, sometimes the greatest strength lies in quietly proving everyone wrong.
Maria Bambina – A Celebration of Faith, History, and Victory
Every year on the 08th September, Malta celebrates the very cherished feast of Maria Bambina, also known as Il-Bambina or Il-Vitorja, which marks the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. However, it also holds profound historical significance, making it one of the few occasions where faith and national identity become intertwined.
The feast is celebrated in the localities of Senglea (L-Isla), Naxxar, Mellieħa, and Xagħra in Gozo, where churches are beautifully decorated, solemn processions take place, bands fill the streets with music, and spectacular fireworks light up the Maltese sky. Like many Maltese festi, it brings together families, neighbours, and visitors in a joyful celebration of community, tradition, and faith.
Beyond its religious significance, the 08th September is also celebrated nationally as Victory Day (Il-Vitorja). The date commemorates some of the most significant moments in Malta's history. It marks the lifting of the Great Siege of 1565, when the Knights of St John and the Maltese people successfully resisted the Ottoman invasion. It also recalls the end of the French occupation in 1800 and Italy's surrender in 1943, which brought an end to the relentless attacks on Malta during the Second World War. These events have made the 08th September a powerful symbol of courage, resilience, and hope for the Maltese people.
One of the day's most eagerly awaited traditions is the Victory Day Regatta, held in the spectacular setting of the Grand Harbour. This prestigious rowing competition sees crews representing the harbour cities compete in traditional Maltese boats. More than a sporting event, the Regatta is a celebration of teamwork, determination, and the enduring spirit of the Maltese people. Fierce rivalries, colourful celebrations, and enthusiastic supporters make it one of the highlights of the national calendar.
Maria Bambina/Il-Vitorja remains much more than a traditional village feast as it reminds us of Malta's rich heritage, its enduring faith, and the determination of a nation that has overcome great challenges throughout its history. Whether celebrated through prayer, colourful festivities, or historical remembrance, this special day continues to unite communities and inspire pride in Malta's remarkable past.
